Expiration Date of Options Contract

Every option has an expiration date.

Side note: the expiration of an option is often in the morning before trading commences. That means your last opportunity to buy or sell the option is the day before expiration. Some options technically expire on Saturday morning when the market doesn’t trade at all. We’ll cover more information about the expiration of options in another lesson.

There are multiple expiration dates available for standardized options, so this must be identified in your order to buy or sell an option.

The time until expiration is often referred to as Days to Expiration (DTE). Some platforms provide a more practical Days Until Last Traded and reference the Last Date Traded in the platform. While this is practical, the official symbol of the option will designate the official expiration date of the option contract.
